Few sights in Morocco match a tbourida: a line of riders in white, their horses dressed in embroidered saddles, galloping side by side before firing their old muskets in a single thunderclap. Listed by UNESCO in 2021, this equestrian art — better known abroad as the Moroccan fantasia — is performed at the moussems, the festivals held around the shrines of local saints, from village fields to huge gatherings that last a week.

The guides in this section explain how a fantasia works, where and when to see one — including the Moussem of Sidi El Mokhtar, on the road between Marrakech and Essaouira — how to photograph it, and how to get there and back, which is rarely easy by public transport.

Moussems take place in the countryside, often far from bus routes, and the best moments come late in the afternoon. A private driver solves both problems: see our Marrakech to Essaouira transfer, our full-day private excursion from Essaouira, or contact us for a custom day.
