If you search for a fantasia show in Marrakech, you will find dinner shows on the edge of the city, every evening, with a horse arena under the stars. If you ask Moroccans where to see tbourida, they will talk about moussems — village festivals with dust, tea tents and dozens of troupes. Both exist, both are worth seeing, and they are very different experiences.
Here is an honest comparison, written by people who drive visitors to both.
What a fantasia show in Marrakech looks like
The dinner shows take place in large venues on the outskirts of the city, a twenty- to forty-minute drive from the medina. The best known, Chez Ali, is on the northern edge of Marrakech; others are towards the Palmeraie or the road to the Agafay desert. The format is similar:
- Arrival around sunset. Guests are welcomed by musicians and riders, and walk through courtyards where folk troupes from different regions of Morocco play.
- Dinner in a large tent. A set Moroccan menu — salads, tagine or couscous, sometimes roasted lamb — served at long tables, with music between courses.
- The fantasia. After dinner, everyone moves to the arena for the show: a line of riders galloping and firing, often followed by acrobatics on horseback and other acts, under floodlights.
- Back to town around 10.30 to 11 pm.
The price is per person, usually including dinner and soft drinks, and varies with the venue and the season. Many venues sell transport in shared shuttles that pick up at several hotels.
A real moussem: what is different
A moussem is a festival in honour of a local saint, with a fair, prayers and — often — a tbourida on a long earth track. The fantasia is not a show staged for visitors but a competition between troupes from the region, watched by thousands of local families.
- It happens in the afternoon, with the best passages towards sunset.
- Entry is free; you pay for your tea, your grilled meat and your transport.
- Dozens of sorbas follow one another, so you see the real thing, many times over.
- The dates are specific — sometimes announced only a few weeks ahead — and the venue is in the countryside.

Which one should you choose?
- You are only in Marrakech for two or three nights and want a guaranteed evening: the fantasia show in Marrakech is the practical choice.
- You travel with young children: the dinner show is shorter, seated and finishes at a set time.
- You love photography or authentic festivals: go to a moussem — and read our tips on how to photograph a fantasia.
- You are heading to Essaouira in late October 2026: the Moussem of Sidi El Mokhtar, from 22 to 25 October, is right on the road between the two cities.

Getting there and back
For a dinner show, shared shuttles are convenient but slow: they collect guests from many hotels before and after the show, and the return can take a while. A private car takes you straight from your riad to the venue and back, which matters with children or after a long day. Riads in the medina cannot be reached by car, so your driver meets you at the nearest gate or square — the same system as for our Marrakech airport transfer, from €20 per vehicle. For an evening return trip to a show, ask us for a price.
For a moussem, the venue is usually in the countryside and the last passages end after dark. A driver who waits is the easiest option; if you are travelling on to the coast, add the moussem as a stop on our Marrakech to Essaouira transfer, from €90 per vehicle at the time of writing.
Make a day of it
A fantasia evening pairs well with a day out of town: our Ourika Valley day trip brings you back to Marrakech in the late afternoon, in time for a show. For more ideas, see our list of things to do in Marrakech and, for the moussem season, our moussem calendar.
