Halfway between Marrakech and the ocean, the small town of Sidi El Mokhtar is easy to drive through without noticing. Once a year it changes completely: tents go up, families arrive from the surrounding villages and the riding ground fills with the smoke and thunder of the tbourida. The Moussem Sidi El Mokhtar is one of the most popular fantasia gatherings in the region — and in 2026 it falls in the middle of the autumn travel season, within easy reach of Essaouira and Marrakech.
Here is what we know about the 2026 edition, what you will see there and how to get there and back.
Moussem Sidi El Mokhtar 2026: the dates
The moussem usually takes place in August. In 2026 it was postponed, and the Moroccan press reported in early October that it would officially be held from Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 October 2026. The programme announced so far includes traditional fantasia (tbourida) shows, cultural and heritage activities and a commercial fair; the detailed timetable is usually confirmed locally just before the opening.
As with every moussem, the programme can change at short notice. If you are planning a trip specifically for the fantasia, check with us the day before: our drivers are from the region and hear the local news first.
Where is Sidi El Mokhtar?
Sidi El Mokhtar — also written Sid L'Mokhtar — is a rural commune of Chichaoua province, in the Marrakech-Safi region, known as the home of the Ouled Bou Sbaa tribe. It sits on the main road between Marrakech and Essaouira, about 25 km west of Chichaoua:
- about 100 km from Marrakech, roughly 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 by car;
- about 85 km from Essaouira by road, a little over an hour.
That position makes the moussem a natural stop on a Marrakech to Essaouira transfer — or an easy afternoon trip from either city. Our guide to getting to Sidi El Mokhtar from Essaouira and Marrakech compares the options in detail.
What happens at the moussem
A moussem is first of all a festival in honour of a local saint — here the saint whose name the town carries. It mixes religion, commerce and celebration. Recent editions have followed a familiar pattern:
- Tbourida on the riding ground. The fantasia takes place on the mahrak, the long earth track at the edge of town. Troupes (sorbas) come from across the province and beyond; each passage ends in a single volley of gunpowder. The afternoon sessions are the most spectacular.
- The fair. Rows of tents sell tea, grilled meat, sweets, toys, clothes and household goods. For many families of the region it is the outing of the year.
- Folk evenings. After sunset, local troupes perform traditional music and songs.
- The religious side. Visits to the shrine, Quran recitations and, in past editions, a closing ceremony at the end of the moussem.
The 2024 edition, the 57th, ran over four days in late October with tbourida, sports competitions, talks and evening shows — a good idea of what to expect in 2026. If you have never seen one, read our guide to what a moussem is and our complete guide to the Moroccan fantasia before you go.

A suggested afternoon at the Moussem Sidi El Mokhtar
- Leave Essaouira around 1 pm (or Marrakech around noon). The road crosses argan country and the rolling plain of the Chiadma and Haouz.
- Arrive mid-afternoon, walk through the fair and have a glass of mint tea under a tent.
- Find a spot along the track an hour or two before sunset, when the sorbas follow one another and the light turns gold.
- Leave after the last passages. Your driver waits near the entrance and you are back in Essaouira or Marrakech in the evening.
Travelling between the two cities that day? Combine it all: leave Marrakech after lunch, spend the late afternoon at the moussem and continue to Essaouira for dinner — or the other way round.
Practical tips
- Dress modestly and practically: covered shoulders, closed shoes, a hat and a scarf against the dust.
- Carry cash in small notes. There are no card terminals at the fair.
- Stay behind the barriers during the fantasia and keep children close; the shots are loud near the end of the track.
- Ask before taking portraits, especially of women and families. Riders are usually happy to pose before or after their passage — our tips on photographing a fantasia help.
- Expect crowds at the weekend. Saturday and Sunday are the busiest days; Thursday and Friday are calmer.
Getting to the moussem from Essaouira or Marrakech
There is no direct public transport to the riding ground, and grands taxis fill up with local families during the moussem. The simplest solution is a private driver who brings you, waits and takes you back.
- From Marrakech to Essaouira, with a stop: our Marrakech to Essaouira transfer costs from €90 per vehicle for up to three passengers, €120 in a van for four to seven and €170 in a minibus, at the time of writing. Short stops are normal; for a longer visit to the moussem, tell us when you book.
- From Essaouira and back: a custom afternoon with a driver, priced on request — similar in spirit to our full-day private excursion.
- Landing at Essaouira airport? Our Essaouira airport to Marrakech transfer passes by the town.
For groups, our minibuses carry up to seventeen passengers — see group transport in Essaouira. Send us the date and the number of people via the contact page and we will reply with a quote. And if you miss this one, our moussem calendar lists the next fantasia dates.
