Most travellers only see Sidi El Mokhtar through a car window, on the way between Marrakech and the Atlantic. During its moussem — 22 to 25 October in 2026 — the town becomes a destination in itself, with tbourida in the afternoon and a fair that draws the whole region. This guide explains how to reach Sidi El Mokhtar from Essaouira or from Marrakech, how long it takes and why the return trip is the part you should plan first.

For the programme of the festival itself, see our guide to the Moussem Sidi El Mokhtar 2026.

Where Sidi El Mokhtar is, in figures

Sidi El Mokhtar belongs to Chichaoua province and sits on the main road that links Marrakech to Essaouira. From Marrakech, cars usually take the motorway towards Agadir as far as Chichaoua, then turn west; the town is about 25 km further on. From Essaouira, the road heads inland through Ounagha and the argan country.

Times are without stops and in normal traffic; count a little more on moussem days, when the last kilometres fill with families, vans and horse trailers.

Sidi El Mokhtar from Essaouira: your options

The easiest way to go to Sidi El Mokhtar from Essaouira is a driver who picks you up at your riad or hotel, drops you near the riding ground and waits. You choose your timing — typically leaving around 1 pm and coming back after sunset — and you are not dependent on anyone else's schedule. It works like our full-day private excursion from Essaouira, shortened to an afternoon, and the price is per vehicle, so it gets cheaper per person in a group.

Bus and grand taxi

Long-distance buses between Essaouira and Marrakech use this road, but they are designed to link the two cities, not to drop you at a moussem and collect you after the fantasia. Shared grands taxis do run between the towns of the region, often with a change in Chichaoua, but during the moussem they are full of local families and there is no guarantee of a seat back in the evening. Fine for an adventurous solo traveller in daylight; not ideal with children or after dark.

Rental car

Possible, but parking near the riding ground is improvised and dusty, and the drive back is on a two-lane road at night, shared with trucks, livestock and pedestrians without lights. If you rent, plan to leave before full darkness.

Sidi El Mokhtar from Marrakech

From Marrakech you have two good formulas:

  1. A stop on your way to Essaouira. Book our Marrakech to Essaouira transfer and tell us you want to spend the afternoon at the moussem. You leave Marrakech after lunch, watch the fantasia and reach Essaouira in the evening. At the time of writing the transfer costs from €90 per vehicle for one to three passengers, €120 in a van for four to seven and €170 in a minibus for up to seventeen; we quote the extra time for a long stop when you book.
  2. A round trip from Marrakech. Possible as a custom day, but it means about three hours of driving in total for a few hours on site. If you were going to the coast anyway, the stopover is better value.

Why the return trip matters most

The fantasia often reaches its best in the last hour of daylight, and many visitors want to stay until the end. That is exactly when the grands taxis are taken and the road becomes busy. With a private driver, the car is waiting, the driver knows the road at night and you are back in town for dinner. If you are a group, our vans and minibuses keep everyone together — see group transport in Essaouira.

What to see on the road

The route between Sidi El Mokhtar and the coast is pleasant in itself: argan trees, sometimes with goats in the branches, women's argan oil cooperatives and small market towns. Our guide to the best stops on the Marrakech to Essaouira road lists the ones worth your time, and the Chichaoua carpets are a classic stop on the Marrakech side.
