Most people think of the drive between Marrakech and Essaouira as a transfer — two and a half hours to get from the riad to the ocean. It can be much more than that. The Marrakech to Essaouira road crosses the Haouz plain, a carpet-weaving town, the argan country and the hills of the Chiadma before dropping down to the Atlantic, and a few well-chosen stops turn it into a small journey of its own.

For the comparison between private transfer, bus and rental car, read our guide to Marrakech to Essaouira: private transfer, bus or rental car. This page is about the road itself.

In total, about 190 km: two and a half to three hours without stops, three and a half to four hours with a relaxed breakfast and two or three photo stops.

Stop 1: Chichaoua, the carpet town

About an hour from Marrakech, Chichaoua is known across Morocco for its rugs: deep red backgrounds, geometric motifs and sometimes small stylised figures, woven by the women of the region. A short stop at a carpet shop or a cooperative is the best way to see them. Read our guide to Chichaoua carpets before you go, especially if you plan to buy.

Stop 2: breakfast in Sidi El Mokhtar

Halfway, the small town of Sidi El Mokhtar is the classic breakfast stop: roadside cafés serve mint tea, msemen pancakes with honey, harcha semolina bread and fresh orange juice. In 2026 the town also holds its moussem, with tbourida, from 22 to 25 October — see our guide to the Moussem of Sidi El Mokhtar and how to visit it from Essaouira or Marrakech.

Stop 3: the goats in the argan trees

West of Sidi El Mokhtar the argan trees multiply, and so do the famous goats in the trees. Goats genuinely climb argan trees to eat the fruit, especially in late summer. Along the busiest stretch, though, some herders keep goats in a roadside tree for photos and expect a small tip. If you prefer a spontaneous scene, ask your driver to watch for goats further from the main stops — or simply enjoy the show and keep a few coins ready.

Stop 4: an argan oil cooperative

The last thirty kilometres before Essaouira are lined with women's argan cooperatives. A visit takes twenty to thirty minutes: you see the nuts being cracked by hand, taste argan oil and amlou — a spread of argan oil, almonds and honey — and can buy cosmetic or culinary oil directly from the producers. Our guide to visiting an argan oil cooperative explains how to recognise good oil.

Stop 5: the first view of the ocean

After Ounagha the road climbs gently through the argan forest, then suddenly the horizon opens: the Atlantic, the white medina and the Mogador islands. If the light is good, ask your driver for a quick photo stop before the last descent into town.

Practical tips for the Marrakech to Essaouira road

  • Leave Marrakech early if you want to stop: cafés are busy and the light is beautiful in the morning.
  • Bring small change for tea, tips and photos with goats.
  • Restrooms are available at roadside cafés and fuel stations.
  • Motion sickness: the road is mostly straight; the only curves are in the last hilly section before Essaouira.
  • Travelling the other way? The same stops work from Essaouira to Marrakech — leave after breakfast, have lunch in Chichaoua and arrive in Marrakech in the afternoon.

Doing it with a private driver

With a private transfer, short stops for a coffee, the goats or a cooperative are normal — just tell your driver. Our Marrakech to Essaouira transfer costs from €90 per vehicle for up to three passengers, €120 in a van for four to seven and €170 in a minibus for larger groups, at the time of writing; the Essaouira to Marrakech transfer costs the same. Landing in Marrakech? Our Marrakech airport transfer takes you to your riad first, or ask for a direct transfer from the airport to Essaouira. Want more argan country once you arrive? Our half-day argan route excursion continues the story south of Essaouira.
