Many travellers combine two very different Moroccos: a few days in the medina of Marrakech, then a week of sun, sea and surf on the Atlantic. The link between them is one of the smoothest drives in the country. Marrakech to Agadir takes about three hours on a modern motorway that crosses the western end of the High Atlas — and if you plan it well, it can be a pleasant part of the holiday rather than a chore.

Here is everything we tell our own passengers before the trip.

Marrakech to Agadir: distance and driving time

The two cities are roughly 250 km apart. The fastest route is the A7 motorway, a toll road that leaves Marrakech to the west, runs across the plains towards Chichaoua and then climbs into the mountains through a series of tunnels and viaducts before dropping down to the Souss plain and the coast.

Door to door, count on about 2 h 45 to 3 hours, including the time it takes to get out of the medina and into the right neighbourhood of Agadir. Add half an hour if you want a coffee stop at one of the motorway service areas, which have cafés, clean toilets and fuel.

Option 1: the bus

Two reliable coach companies, CTM and Supratours, run between Marrakech and Agadir several times a day. Tickets are cheap, seats are reserved and the coaches are air-conditioned.

The catch is everything around the journey: getting to the bus station with your luggage, arriving at least 30 minutes early, paying a small fee for each bag in the hold, and then finding a taxi at the other end to reach your hotel, surf camp or apartment. With children, several suitcases or surfboards, the bus quickly becomes the most tiring option. There is no railway to Agadir, so the train is not an alternative.

Option 2: driving yourself

The motorway itself is easy and well maintained. The harder parts are leaving Marrakech in traffic, finding parking in Agadir and the fact that one-way car rentals between cities often carry a surcharge. It works well if you plan to keep the car for your whole stay on the coast.

Option 3: a private transfer from Marrakech to Agadir

A private transfer is the door-to-door option: your driver collects you at your riad, hotel or at Marrakech airport, loads the luggage and drops you at your exact address in Agadir, at Agadir Al Massira airport or further north in Taghazout. You choose the departure time, stops are easy and nobody else joins the car.

At the time of writing, our Marrakech to Agadir transfer costs €120 per vehicle for up to four passengers, €130 for a van for up to seven and €160 for a minibus for up to seventeen. Water, air conditioning, fuel and waiting time are included; tips and meal stops are not.

The scenic alternative: the Tizi n'Test

Before the motorway existed, the classic mountain route south was the Tizi n'Test, a narrow pass above 2,000 metres that links the valleys south of Marrakech to Taroudant. It passes through Asni and Ouirgane and close to the 12th-century Almohad mosque of Tinmel, and the views are among the most dramatic in the Atlas.

It is also slow, winding and sometimes affected by snow or rockfalls, so it turns the trip into a full day. Our standard transfer uses the motorway. If you dream of the mountain road instead, ask us when you book and we will tell you honestly whether it makes sense for your dates.

Tips for the journey

  • Leave in the morning. You arrive in time for lunch by the sea and avoid driving into Agadir after dark.
  • Pack a layer. The coast is often cooler and hazier than Marrakech, especially in the morning.
  • Tell us about boards and bikes. Surfboards, golf bags and bikes fit easily when we know in advance and plan the right vehicle.
