Every winter, planeloads of Europeans swap grey skies for the Souss coast, and most of them land at Agadir Al Massira. The airport is modern and easy to use, with budget and charter flights from across Europe. The part that surprises first-time visitors is the distance: the terminal sits well inland, so your Agadir airport transfer is a proper drive rather than a quick hop — and if you are heading for the surf villages further north, it is longer still.

Where Al Massira Airport is
The airport (code AGA) lies roughly 25 km south-east of central Agadir, surrounded by farmland rather than hotels. From there, the main destinations are:

Traffic through Agadir itself can add time in the late afternoon, which matters more on the way to a flight than on the way to the beach.
Agadir airport transfer options
Taxis at the airport
Grand taxis wait outside arrivals and are the default choice for many independent travellers. As anywhere in Morocco, agree the fare for the whole car before you set off, check that your luggage — and any surfboards — will actually fit, and have your address written down, especially for a surf camp or apartment without a well-known name.
Private transfers
A private driver makes most sense when the journey is long, the group is big or the luggage is awkward. Hire a car or book a driver?
Plenty of visitors pick up a rental car at Al Massira, and on this coast it can make sense: the roads are good and parking in Agadir is easy. It makes less sense if you are staying put in Taghazout, where parking in the village is tight and most of what you need is within walking distance. A simple rule: if you plan several road trips, rent a car; if you plan to surf, swim and eat, book a transfer for the airport days and use local taxis in between. It is usually cheaper, and nobody has to stay sober to drive back from dinner.
Open-jaw trips: in through one airport, out through another
One of the best ways to see southern Morocco is to fly into one city and out of another, so you never drive the same road twice. A classic version:
- Land in Marrakech and spend a few days in the medina.
- Take the road west to Essaouira for the ocean and the argan country.
- Follow the coast road south past Imsouane and Taghazout.
- Fly home from Agadir.

Surfers: from the terminal to the line-up
Agadir is the natural airport for Taghazout, Tamraght and the point breaks north of the city. Tell us how many boards you are bringing and how long they are, so we send a vehicle with enough space — longboards and multiple board bags need a van. Staying in Agadir itself?
Agadir was rebuilt after the 1960 earthquake, so it feels more like a modern seaside resort than an old medina town. Its long, sheltered beach and promenade make it an easy base for families, and the kasbah ruins on the hill above the port give the best view over the bay at sunset. Most hotels have direct car access, so drop-offs are simple.
Leaving from Agadir: when to set off
For an international flight, aim to be at the terminal about two and a half hours before departure. Working back from that:
- from the Agadir hotel zone, leave about 3 h before your flight;
- from Taghazout or Tamraght, about 3 h 30 before;
- from Essaouira, about 5 h 30 before;
- from Marrakech, about 5 h 30 before.
If your flight leaves early in the morning, ask your hotel or surf camp for a breakfast box the night before — kitchens rarely open at 4 am.
