If you are flying to Morocco from North America, there is a good chance your plane lands in Casablanca. Royal Air Maroc's nonstop flights from New York and Montreal arrive at Mohammed V International Airport, and many European connections route through it too. The catch is that most travellers are not staying in Casablanca at all — they are heading for the riads of Marrakech. That makes Casablanca airport to Marrakech one of the most searched journeys in the country, usually by people who have just spent a night on a plane.
Here is how the options compare, and how to make the transfer as painless as possible.
Where the airport is, and how far Marrakech is
Mohammed V Airport (code CMN) lies about 30 km south of central Casablanca. That is good news: you do not need to cross the city to head south. By road, the A7 motorway runs almost all the way to Marrakech, and door to door you should plan on around three hours, depending on where you are staying and on traffic around both cities.
Casablanca airport to Marrakech: your three options
The train
An airport rail line links the terminal with Casablanca's main stations, where you change for a train to Marrakech. Moroccan trains are comfortable and inexpensive, and the Casablanca–Marrakech leg itself takes a little under three hours. Add the airport shuttle, the change and the waiting time between services, and the whole journey commonly takes four to five hours. You then arrive at Marrakech station and still need a taxi to your hotel or to the medina gate nearest your riad.
It works well for light travellers with flexible plans. With big suitcases, children or a late connection, the platforms and changes become the hard part of the day.
The coach
Long-distance coaches between Casablanca and Marrakech leave from stations in the city rather than from the airport, so you first need a taxi into town. It is the cheapest option on paper, and the slowest in practice.
A private transfer
Your driver meets you in the arrivals hall, loads the bags and joins the motorway straight away. Tolls, air conditioning and bottled water are included, and you can sleep for most of the drive. The jet-lag factor
The overnight flight from the east coast of North America is short enough to make sleep difficult and long enough to leave you wrecked. A few things make the Casablanca airport to Marrakech day much easier:
- Drink water, not coffee, in the car. Your body will thank you at dinner time.
- Nap if you need to, but not all afternoon. A two-hour doze on the motorway is fine; a four-hour siesta in the riad will keep you awake at 3 am.
- Keep your first evening simple. Eat at your riad or close to it, and save the souks for the next morning.
- Let the riad know your arrival time. We can call them as we approach so that someone meets you at the gate.
What the drive looks like
Once you leave the suburbs, the motorway crosses wide, flat farmland before the landscape turns drier and redder towards the Haouz plain. There is a service area roughly halfway, which makes a natural stop for a coffee, a snack and a stretch. The first sight of the High Atlas on a clear day, with Marrakech spread out beneath it, is a lovely welcome after a long trip.

Worth a detour? The Hassan II Mosque
If you land early and feel surprisingly fresh, Casablanca's Hassan II Mosque is one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims can visit, on guided tours at set times. It adds a couple of hours to the day, so it suits travellers with energy to spare rather than families after a sleepless night. Ask us when booking and we will plan the stop around the tour times.
Going the other way
For the flight home, a long-haul departure deserves a generous buffer. From Marrakech, leave around six hours before departure: three hours on the road and three at the airport for check-in, security and passport control.
