Casablanca is where many journeys to Morocco begin and end. Long-haul flights from North America land there, business travellers have meetings there, and travellers who fly into Marrakech often fly home from Casablanca's Mohammed V airport because the connection suits them better. So the question comes up constantly: what is the best way to get from Marrakech to Casablanca?
The honest answer depends on where exactly you are going — the city centre or the airport — and how much luggage you have.
Marrakech to Casablanca: distance and time
The two cities are about 240 km apart, linked by the A7 motorway. By car, the journey takes roughly 3 hours door to door, depending on traffic when entering Casablanca, which can be heavy at rush hour.
One detail matters a lot: Mohammed V International Airport lies south of Casablanca, near Nouaceur, so coming from Marrakech you reach the airport before the city. Going straight to the airport is simpler than going into town.
Option 1: the train
ONCF trains run between Marrakech station, in the Guéliz district, and Casablanca several times a day. The journey takes roughly two and a half to three hours, first-class carriages are comfortable and tickets are reasonably priced. An extension of Morocco's high-speed line towards Marrakech is under construction, which will shorten the trip in the future.
The train is a good choice if you travel light and are staying near a Casablanca station. It is less convenient when:
- You are flying out. To reach the airport you usually need to change trains in Casablanca, with all your luggage, and allow a comfortable margin for connections.
- You are staying in the medina. Getting from your riad to the station, with porters and a taxi, takes time on the Marrakech side too.
- You travel as a family or a group. Several tickets plus taxis at both ends add up quickly.
Option 2: a private transfer from Marrakech to Casablanca
With a private transfer, your driver collects you at your riad or hotel at the time you choose and takes you directly to your address in Casablanca or to the departure terminal at the airport. Motorway tolls are included, the car is air-conditioned and there is water on board.

Catching a flight from Casablanca
If you are flying out of Mohammed V, planning your departure time is the most important decision of the day.
- Work backwards. Your airline will tell you how early to arrive; for international flights, we usually suggest being at the airport about three hours before departure.
- Add the drive and a margin. With about three hours on the road and some buffer for traffic, a mid-afternoon flight means a morning pickup.
- Keep your passport handy. There are security checks at the terminal entrance and again before departures.

A few hours in Casablanca
If your schedule allows, Casablanca deserves more than an airport run:
- The Hassan II Mosque — one of the largest mosques in the world, built partly over the ocean, and one of the few in Morocco that non-Muslims can visit on a guided tour.
- The Corniche of Ain Diab — a long seafront promenade with beach clubs and cafés.
- The Habous quarter — a calm "new medina" built in the 20th century, good for pastries and books.
- Downtown's Art Deco and colonial-era buildings, around the Boulevard Mohammed V.
Pickup in Marrakech: riads, hotels and the airport
Most lanes in the medina are too narrow for cars, so if you are staying in a riad, your driver meets you at the nearest gate or square and a porter can bring your bags. - Solo traveller with a backpack, going to the city centre: take the train.
- Couple or family, flying out of Mohammed V: take a private transfer — it is simpler and often similar in total cost.
- Group of five or more: a van or minibus is almost always the cheapest per person.
