It happens more often than you might think: travellers fall in love with Essaouira, stay a few extra days, and then realise their flight home leaves from Casablanca. Others come from North America, land at Mohammed V and want to reach the coast without a stop in Marrakech. Either way, the trip from Essaouira to Casablanca is one of the longest transfers we drive — and one where good planning makes all the difference.
Essaouira to Casablanca: distance and time
Depending on the route, the two cities are roughly 350 to 400 km apart. With an experienced driver and a short rest stop, the journey takes about 4 to 5 hours door to door. There is no railway from Essaouira, and no quick way to combine a bus and a train without losing most of the day, which is why most families and couples choose a private car for this leg.
There are two ways to drive it.
Route 1: inland, via the motorway
The faster option heads inland through the argan country towards Chichaoua, then joins Morocco's motorway network to Casablanca. It is less scenic, but more predictable — the natural choice when you have a flight to catch. Motorway tolls are included in our price.
Route 2: the coast, via Safi, Oualidia and El Jadida
The coastal route follows the Atlantic north through three places that deserve a stop:
- Safi — a working port famous for its pottery. On the hill of the potters, workshops and kilns turn out the glazed plates and tagines you see across Morocco.
- Oualidia — a calm lagoon protected from the ocean, famous for its oysters. It is the perfect lunch stop, and our Oualidia guide explains why many travellers end up staying a night.
- El Jadida — the old Portuguese fortified city of Mazagan, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its underground Portuguese Cistern, with its vaulted ceiling reflected in a thin layer of water, is one of the most photogenic rooms in Morocco; Orson Welles filmed scenes of his Othello there.
This route is longer and slower, so it works best when you are heading to a hotel in Casablanca rather than to a flight — or when you split the journey with a night in Oualidia. Our Essaouira to Oualidia transfer makes that easy.
Catching a flight from Casablanca
This is the part to get right. Mohammed V International Airport lies south of Casablanca, near Nouaceur, so you do not need to cross the city to reach it.
- Check your airline's advice on how early to arrive. For international flights, we usually suggest being at the airport about three hours before departure.
- Add the drive plus a margin. With four to five hours on the road and a buffer for traffic, a mid-afternoon flight means leaving Essaouira early in the morning.
- Avoid the tightest connections. If your flight leaves early in the morning, spending your last night near Casablanca is often more relaxing than a pre-dawn departure from Essaouira.

Private transfer: price and what is included
At the time of writing, our Essaouira to Casablanca airport transfer costs €170 per vehicle for up to four passengers, €200 for a van for up to seven and €240 for a minibus for up to seventeen. Our Essaouira to Casablanca city transfer is the same price and takes you to any address in the city.
Included: an experienced long-distance driver, door-to-door service, air conditioning, water, motorway tolls and a rest stop on the way. Not included: meals and tips. For a family or a small group, the price per person is often close to what you would pay for separate bus and train tickets plus taxis — without the changes.
Tips for a long transfer
- Pickup from the medina. Cars cannot enter the lanes of Essaouira's medina, so your driver meets you at the nearest gate, where porters with carts can help with your bags.
- Snacks and layers. The coast is cool in the morning and Casablanca can be humid; dress in layers and bring something to eat.
- Travel with children? Tell us their ages so we can plan the right vehicle and extra stops; if your child needs a specific car seat, bringing your own is the most reliable option.
- Lots of luggage or surfboards? Let us know so we send the right vehicle.
Going the other way
Landing in Casablanca and heading straight to the coast? We drive the same route in reverse, and a morning arrival usually means an afternoon on Essaouira's ramparts.
