In Morocco, the fantasia has always been part of celebrations: harvests, religious festivals and, above all, weddings. The photograph above shows riders charging at a royal wedding in 1949. Today, couples planning a destination wedding in Essaouira, and companies organising a seminar or an incentive trip, increasingly ask whether they can add a fantasia show for weddings and events to their programme.
The answer is yes — with planning. Here is what it involves, the questions to ask, the alternatives, and the part we know best: getting every guest there and back.
Why a fantasia show for weddings and celebrations?
A tbourida is a spectacular welcome. A troupe of riders in white robes, their horses dressed in embroidered saddles, gallops towards the guests and fires a single volley of black powder. It lasts less than a minute, it can be repeated several times, and it gives an event an unmistakably Moroccan signature. If you have never seen one, read our complete guide to the Moroccan fantasia first.
It works especially well:
- at the arrival of the couple or the guests, before dinner;
- at sunset, when the light and the powder flashes are at their best;
- for a corporate gala, as a surprise between the aperitif and dinner.
What it takes
A fantasia is not a band you set up in a corner. Discuss these points early with your venue and your event planner:
- Space. The riders need a flat, open strip of ground of about 150 to 200 metres, away from tents, cars and guests. Many riad venues in the medina are simply too small; countryside estates around Essaouira are better suited.
- Safety. Guests must stand behind a barrier on the side of the track, never at the end. The muskets fire blank powder charges, but horses at full gallop need room to stop.
- Authorisations. Gunpowder and a public performance usually require local authorisations; troupes and experienced planners know the procedure.
- Timing. Allow time for the troupe to arrive with horse trailers, prepare and rest the horses. Avoid the midday heat in summer.
- The troupe. A troupe for a private event usually counts fewer riders than at a moussem. The price depends on the number of riders, the distance travelled and the date — summer weekends are the busiest.
We are a transport company, not an event agency: we do not book troupes ourselves, but we work alongside the planners and venues that do, and we handle the guests' transport.

A sample timeline for the evening
- 5.30 pm — the shuttles leave the hotels and riads; guests arrive at the venue as the troupe finishes preparing the horses.
- 6.15 pm — welcome drinks, with the guests gathered behind the barrier along the track.
- 6.30 pm — the fantasia: several passages as the sun goes down, ending with a final volley in front of the couple or the hosts.
- 7.15 pm — photos with the riders and their horses, then dinner.
- 11.30 pm onwards — return shuttles at set times, so that nobody is left waiting.
Adjust the times to the season: in winter the sun sets around six, in summer closer to eight.
Venues around Essaouira
The countryside around Essaouira — the argan hills of Ghazoua, the dunes near Diabat, the estates on the road to Sidi Kaouki — offers villas and event venues with enough open land for horses, ten to thirty minutes from the medina. Our guide to getting married in Essaouira compares the settings, and our article on corporate seminars in Essaouira covers business events.
Alternatives to a private fantasia
- Take your guests to a real moussem. If your dates match, a group outing to a moussem with tbourida is unforgettable — in 2026, the Moussem of Sidi El Mokhtar takes place from 22 to 25 October, about an hour from Essaouira.
- A fantasia dinner show near Marrakech, if part of your programme is in Marrakech — see fantasia show in Marrakech.
- Music instead of horses: a Gnawa troupe, a folk ensemble or Andalusian musicians are easier to host in a riad. Our Essaouira music festivals guide gives you an idea of the local scene.
- A horse escort on the beach for the couple's photos — ask the stables we mention in our guide to horse riding in Essaouira.
Guest transport: the part that makes or breaks the day
Countryside venues are beautiful but far from taxis, and a wedding or a gala ends late. That is where we come in:
- Airport arrivals. Guests land at different times at Essaouira-Mogador or Marrakech. Our Essaouira airport transfer (from €20 per vehicle) and airport to Diabat & Ghazoua transfer cover the closest airport; our Marrakech to Essaouira transfer (from €90 per vehicle, €170 for a minibus) brings guests from Marrakech.
- Shuttles on the day. Vans for up to seven and minibuses for up to seventeen passengers run between hotels, riads and the venue, with a return schedule after dinner — see group transport in Essaouira.
- Day-after outings. A private picnic excursion on the coast is a lovely way to end the celebrations.
Prices are per vehicle, at the time of writing. Send us your guest list by arrival airport and your programme via the contact page, and we will build a transport plan — whether or not your event includes a fantasia show for weddings or a gala.
