Couples who choose Essaouira usually fall for the same things: the ocean light, the whitewashed medina, the riads glowing with candles, the music. A wedding in Essaouira feels relaxed and elegant at once — less flashy than Marrakech, more intimate, with the Atlantic as a backdrop.

Here is how to plan it, and above all how to look after your guests' transport, which is where most destination weddings either run smoothly or don't.

Civil marriage in Morocco for foreign couples involves substantial paperwork and specific rules depending on nationality and religion. Many couples therefore marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony and celebration in Essaouira. Check the rules with your consulate early if you want a legal wedding in Morocco.

Countryside villas are often the most beautiful option, but they make transport essential: guests cannot walk back to the medina at 2 am.

When to plan a wedding in Essaouira

Spring (April–June) and early autumn (September–October) are the favourite seasons: mild days and soft light. Summer is busy and windy in the afternoons — plan the ceremony for the late afternoon, in a sheltered garden. Winter is mild by day but cool at night, perfect for indoor riad celebrations. Avoid the Gnaoua festival weekend in late June (24–26 June 2027), when every room in town is taken. More in our best time to visit Essaouira.

Moroccan touches your guests will love

  • A henna evening before the wedding.
  • Gnawa or Andalusian musicians during the cocktail hour.
  • The bride's entrance on the amariya, the traditional palanquin, accompanied by a neggafa who dresses the bride in several caftans through the night.
  • A mint tea and pastry welcome, and a pastilla or a fish tagine on the menu.

Guest transport: the plan that saves your wedding

Your guests will arrive on different days, at different airports, many of them for the first time in Morocco. A clear plan avoids a lot of WhatsApp messages on your wedding day.

  1. Collect flight details from guests two months before (a simple shared form works).
  2. Group the arrivals: guests landing within an hour of each other at Marrakech share a van or minibus to Essaouira (about 2 h 30); those landing at Essaouira-Mogador take the 20-minute transfer.
  3. Meet and greet: drivers wait at arrivals with a sign bearing your names, follow each flight and wait free for 60 minutes after landing.
  4. Wedding day shuttles: minibuses from hotels to the ceremony venue and back — with a first departure for guests who want to leave early and a last one after the party.
  5. Departures: group returns to the airports the day after, scheduled around flights.

At the time of writing, our prices per vehicle are €100 from Marrakech for up to three passengers, €120 in a van for four to seven and €170 in a minibus for up to seventeen; from Essaouira airport, from €20 to the medina or to Diabat and Ghazoua and €50 in a minibus. See the price list and our guide to group transport in Essaouira.

A wedding in Essaouira: sample three-day programme

  • Day 1 — Welcome: guests arrive, grouped airport transfers, a relaxed welcome dinner on a rooftop; for the bride and close friends, a henna evening.
  • Day 2 — The wedding: free morning on the beach or in the medina; shuttles to the venue in the late afternoon; ceremony at golden hour, dinner, music and dancing; shuttles back to the hotels at set times.
  • Day 3 — Farewell: brunch, a camel ride on the beach for those who want it, and group transfers to Marrakech or Essaouira airport.

Share this programme with your guests early, with the shuttle times: it answers most of their questions before they ask them.

Our tip: give every guest a single WhatsApp contact for transport questions.

The day after

Treat your guests to something easy: a brunch on a rooftop, a camel ride on the beach or our private picnic excursion on the coast. Many couples then leave for a honeymoon in the desert — read our Morocco honeymoon itinerary.
