"Is it going to be windy?" is the question our passengers ask most often on the road to the coast. The honest answer: probably, at least in the afternoon — and that is part of Essaouira's charm. The town is pleasant in every month, but the best time to visit Essaouira depends on what you want from your stay: lazy beach mornings, kitesurfing, winter surf, festivals or simply a cool escape from the heat of Marrakech.
Here is how the year really feels on the ground.
Why Essaouira's weather is different
Essaouira sits right on the Atlantic, where a cool ocean current and steady trade winds keep temperatures remarkably stable. While Marrakech regularly passes 40°C in summer, Essaouira's afternoons usually stay in the low to mid-twenties. In winter, days are mild and sunny more often than not, and nights are cool rather than cold.
Two things change much more than the temperature: the wind and the crowds.
The wind: Essaouira's defining feature
The trade winds blow most strongly from roughly April to September, peaking in summer. They usually build during the late morning and are strongest in the afternoon, which is why locals and regulars plan their beach time early. For kitesurfers and windsurfers, this is paradise; for sunbathers, it simply means choosing the right hours and a sheltered spot.
In autumn and winter the wind is generally lighter, while the ocean sends bigger swells onto the coast — good news for surfers.

Spring: our favourite for sightseeing
Spring brings clear light, green countryside and pleasant temperatures for exploring the medina and the argan country. It is an ideal season for our Sidi Kaouki day trip or a half day on the argan route.
Summer: the cool escape
When Marrakech bakes, Essaouira stays fresh. July and August are also the busiest months, with many Moroccan families on holiday, so book accommodation early. Mornings are for the beach, afternoons for the medina and the rooftops.
Autumn: the insider's choice
September and October are often the most beautiful months of the year: the wind eases, the sea is at its warmest, the light is golden and the summer crowds have gone. If we had to choose one period for a first visit, this would be it.
Winter: quiet and authentic
Winter is calm, green and good value. A few rainy days are possible, and evenings call for a jumper, but many travellers love the slower pace — and surfers arrive for the swells.
Sea temperature
The Atlantic here is cooler than the Mediterranean: roughly 17–18°C in mid-winter and around 20–21°C at the end of summer. Swimming is refreshing rather than tropical; a wetsuit makes surf and kite sessions much more comfortable most of the year.
Festivals and events
- The Gnaoua World Music Festival, usually held in June, fills the squares with free concerts and the town with visitors. Book everything well ahead.
- Classical and Andalusian music festivals are held in spring and autumn in some years; check dates before you travel.
- Ramadan moves about eleven days earlier each year. Restaurants for visitors stay open, but the rhythm of the town changes.
Crowds and prices through the year
- Busiest periods: July and August, the Gnaoua festival weekend, Easter and the end-of-year holidays. Riads fill up and prices rise, so book several weeks ahead.
- Quietest periods: November to February outside the holidays, and the weeks between Easter and June. You will have the ramparts almost to yourself in the early morning.
- Day trips and transfers run all year round. In winter we simply keep an eye on the forecast, as a rainy day is better spent in the medina than on a countryside track.
What to pack, whatever the month
- A windproof jacket or fleece — even in August.
- Sunglasses and a scarf for windy days on the beach.
- Sunscreen: the breeze hides how strong the sun is.
- Comfortable shoes for the medina's paving.
