Few destinations offer as much romance in as little distance as Morocco. In a single trip you can wake up in a riad around a candlelit courtyard, cross snowy mountains, share dinner by a fire in the dunes, fall asleep under a sky full of stars and end with a seafood lunch and a sunset over the Atlantic. That is why a Morocco honeymoon is so popular with couples from Europe, North America and beyond — and why a private, tailor-made route makes all the difference.

Here is our romantic itinerary and our favourite experiences for couples.

Why a Morocco honeymoon works so well

  • Contrast: cities, mountains, desert and ocean, all within a few hours.
  • Intimacy: small riads and boutique camps with only a handful of rooms or tents.
  • Pace: with a private driver, you choose when to linger and when to move on.
  • Season: pleasant almost all year, with mild winters and warm autumns.

A sample 8-day Morocco honeymoon itinerary

  1. Days 1–2, Marrakech: a riad with a plunge pool, a hammam for two, the gardens of Majorelle, a rooftop dinner facing the Koutoubia. Our where to stay in Marrakech guide helps you choose.
  2. Day 3, Atlas and Aït Ben Haddou: cross the Tizi n'Tichka and sleep facing the ksar at sunset.
  3. Day 4, Skoura and the Dades: a kasbah guesthouse among the palms or above the river.
  4. Days 5–6, Merzouga: sunset camel ride, two nights in a luxury desert camp with a private bathroom, a private dinner in the dunes, sunrise from the top of a dune.
  5. Day 7, towards the coast: the long road west, with a night in Taroudant or the saffron country.
  6. Day 8, Essaouira: a sea-view riad, the ramparts at sunset, seafood at the port — then a few lazy days by the ocean if you can.

This route follows our 6-day Sahara & Atlantic coast tour and the 7-day grand tour, adapted with extra nights where couples want to slow down.

City, desert, then ocean: why this order works

We usually recommend starting in Marrakech, crossing the mountains to the desert and ending on the coast. The city gives you a few days to settle in and enjoy the medina while you are fresh; the road trip and the desert are the adventure; and the ocean is where you slow down, sleep late and look back at the photos. Ending in Essaouira also means a short, easy drive back to Marrakech airport — or a flight home from Essaouira or Agadir. If you arrive via Agadir, the same loop simply runs the other way.

Where to splurge and where to save

Not every night needs to be a luxury suite. On a Morocco honeymoon, we suggest investing in three moments: a beautiful riad for your first nights in Marrakech, a high-end camp in the dunes, and a room with a view on the coast. In the Dades or Taroudant, charming family guesthouses offer excellent value and often the warmest welcome. The same goes for activities: a private dinner in the dunes or a balloon flight at sunrise are worth it; the rest can stay simple.

The most romantic experiences

  • A private dinner in the dunes, lit by lanterns, away from the main camp.
  • Stargazing wrapped in a blanket, with no light pollution for miles. See our desert camp guide.
  • A sunrise camel ride for two, when the dunes are silent and golden.
  • A hammam and massage in Marrakech after the journey.
  • A cooking class for two, to bring Moroccan flavours home — see our Moroccan cooking class guide.
  • Sunset on the ramparts of Essaouira, with the sound of the waves and the gulls.

Short on time? A 4-day romantic escape

If your honeymoon is mostly elsewhere, a shorter romantic break still works: two nights in a Marrakech riad, then our 3-day Atlas & Agafay tour with a night in a mountain lodge and a night in a luxury Agafay camp facing the Atlas. See the Agafay desert guide.

Practical tips for couples

  • Choose luxury where it matters: a private bathroom and heating in the desert camp make a big difference; simpler guesthouses are fine elsewhere.
  • Book the special nights early: the best boutique camps and sea-view riads have only a few rooms.
  • Tell us it is your honeymoon: many hosts love to add a small surprise — flowers, a cake, a candlelit table.
  • Be discreet in public: holding hands is fine, but keep displays of affection for private spaces, especially in villages.
  • Best seasons: October–November and March–May; winter is wonderful for cosy nights and starry skies.

Our best time to visit the Sahara guide explains the seasons in detail.
