Looking for a hen or stag weekend that is fun without being a cliché? Essaouira offers a beach several kilometres long, waves for beginners, dunes for quad bikes, hammams, rooftop dinners and riads you can rent for your group alone — all within walking distance and 2 h 30 from Marrakech. Here is how to plan a hen party in Essaouira — or a stag weekend.
Hen party in Essaouira: the best activities
- Quad or buggy rides in the dunes and forest south of town — the classic adrenaline moment.
- Surf or kitesurf initiation in the bay, with certified schools — see our surf and kitesurf guide.
- Camel or horse rides on the beach, ideally at sunset.
- Hammam and spa: a gommage and argan-oil massage the morning after.
- A cooking class to learn tagine and Moroccan pastries.
- A private picnic on a wild beach — our private picnic excursion can be adapted to your group.
- Sunset on the Skala and an evening of live Gnawa music — see Essaouira at night.

A sample weekend
- Friday — Arrival at Marrakech or Essaouira airport, transfer straight to your riad, mint tea on the terrace, dinner on a rooftop.
- Saturday — Morning surf lesson or quad ride; lunch of grilled fish at the port; hammam; sunset on the ramparts; the big night out in a rooftop bar with music.
- Sunday — Slow breakfast, camel ride or beach walk, last shopping in the souks, transfer back.
Where to stay
A privatised riad in the medina is the favourite option: your own patio and rooftop, a cook if you want one, and everything on foot. Beachfront apartments suit surf-focused groups, and villas in Ghazoua or Diabat offer pools and privacy (but you will need transport in the evening). Compare the areas in our guide to where to stay in Essaouira.
Nights out — and local etiquette
Essaouira's nightlife is relaxed: rooftop bars, restaurants with live music and a few venues with DJs at weekends. Alcohol is served in licensed hotels, bars and restaurants only. A few simple rules keep everyone happy:
- Keep costumes and props for the riad and the rooftop bar rather than the streets of the medina.
- Dress modestly when walking through the medina, especially near mosques.
- Keep the noise down in the riad late at night — neighbours live a few metres away.
- Ask before photographing local people.
Surprise ideas for the bride or groom
- A henna session at the riad, with a henna artist decorating hands and feet.
- A caftan photo shoot in the medina or on the ramparts at sunset.
- A private chef cooking a Moroccan feast on your terrace.
- A sunset picnic on a wild beach — our private picnic excursion is perfect for this.
- A Gnawa band playing for your group in the riad's patio.
Budget: what a weekend really costs
Transport is the easy part to budget, because prices are per vehicle. At the time of writing, a van from Marrakech costs €120 for up to seven people (around €17 each) and the airport transfer from Essaouira-Mogador €25 for a van. A privatised riad split between eight or ten friends is often cheaper per person than a hotel. Add activities (quad, surf, hammam), dinners and drinks in licensed venues, and you have a hen party in Essaouira that costs far less than many European cities.
When to plan a hen party in Essaouira
Spring and autumn are ideal: warm days, lighter wind and fewer crowds. Summer is lively but windy in the afternoons, and winter is mild and sunny — perfect if your group prefers hammams and rooftop dinners to beach days. Avoid the Gnaoua festival weekend in late June unless the festival is the plan, as rooms become scarce and expensive.
Our tip: create one group chat with the driver's number for the weekend. Share the pick-up times for the airport, the quad or surf session and the big night out, so nobody misses the van — and nobody has to organise taxis at 1 am.
Getting the group there
Prices are per vehicle, which makes group travel very affordable. At the time of writing:
- From Marrakech (Marrakech to Essaouira transfer): €120 for a van of four to seven — around €17 each for seven friends — or €170 for a minibus of up to seventeen.
- From Essaouira-Mogador airport (airport transfer): €25 for a van and €50 for a minibus, about 20 minutes to the medina.
- Back home: book the Essaouira to Marrakech transfer in the same message.
- On the big night: if you are staying outside the medina, ask us for a driver who waits for the group after dinner.
Read our guide to group transport in Essaouira for vehicles and capacities, and check the Essaouira events calendar: a festival weekend can be a bonus — or a reason to book much earlier.
