There is something about the Atlantic coast around Essaouira that makes people slow down: the steady sound of the waves, the light, the argan trees on the hills, the absence of traffic. It is no surprise that the area has become one of Morocco's favourite destinations for yoga retreats — from surf-and-yoga weeks in Sidi Kaouki to quiet retreats in country guesthouses around Ghazoua. A yoga retreat in Essaouira combines ocean, countryside and culture like few places can.
Here is how to choose your yoga retreat in Essaouira, and how to get there without stress.
Where retreats take place
| Area | Setting | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Sidi Kaouki | Long wild beach, small village, 25 km south | Surf and yoga, beach practice at sunrise |
| Ghazoua and the argan countryside | Guesthouses and villas among the trees, 7–10 km from town | Calm, gardens, wellbeing and detox |
| Diabat | Between the river, the dunes and the golf area | Quiet retreats close to town |
| Essaouira medina | Riads with rooftop terraces | Short urban retreats, culture in the afternoons |
| Moulay Bouzerktoun | Windy coastal village, 25 km north | Retreats combined with windsurf or kite |
Our Sidi Kaouki day trip guide shows what the village is like.

When to plan a yoga retreat in Essaouira
- Spring (March–May): mild, green countryside, the favourite season.
- Summer (June–September): cooler than inland Morocco thanks to the trade winds, but windy afternoons — practice is usually scheduled early.
- Autumn (October–November): golden light, calmer wind, good surf.
- Winter (December–February): sunny days around 18–20°C, cool nights; ideal for escaping a European winter.
Choosing a retreat
- Teachers: check their training and the styles taught (hatha, vinyasa, yin…).
- Daily rhythm: how many hours of practice, how much free time.
- The shala: is it sheltered from the wind? Indoor or on a terrace?
- Food: many retreats cook vegetarian Moroccan food with local produce.
- What is included: accommodation, meals, activities, and whether airport transfers are part of the package — often they are not.
- Extras: surf lessons, hammam, massages, horse riding on the beach, an argan cooperative visit.
A typical day on a yoga retreat
- 7 am — Morning practice, often facing the ocean or in a garden shala, followed by meditation.
- 9 am — A generous breakfast: fruit, amlou (argan, almond and honey spread), msemen pancakes, fresh juice.
- Late morning — Surf lesson, beach walk or free time by the pool.
- Afternoon — Workshop, massage, hammam or an outing to the medina or an argan cooperative.
- 6 pm — Gentle evening practice, yin or restorative.
- 8 pm — Vegetarian Moroccan dinner, sometimes with live music.
What to pack for a yoga retreat in Essaouira
- Layers: the coast is mild, but mornings and evenings are cool and windy.
- A windproof jacket for beach walks.
- Your own mat if you prefer, although most retreats provide them.
- Sun protection, reef-friendly if you plan to surf.
- Modest clothes for visits to the medina and villages.
- A swimsuit and a wetsuit if surf lessons are included.
Yoga retreat in Essaouira for beginners
You do not need to be an experienced yogi to enjoy a retreat on the Essaouira coast. Many retreats welcome complete beginners, with gentle morning classes and plenty of time to rest, walk and read. Tell the organisers your level and any injuries before you book, choose a retreat with small groups, and do not hesitate to skip a class to sit by the ocean — it is part of the experience.
Getting to your retreat
Most participants arrive at Essaouira-Mogador airport (20–25 minutes from most retreats) or Marrakech (about 2 h 30 to Essaouira). With us, the driver waits at arrivals with a name sign and drives straight to the retreat:
| From Essaouira-Mogador airport to | Time | Sedan (1–3) | Van (4–7) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Diabat & Ghazoua | about 15 min | €20 | €25 |
| Sidi Kaouki | about 25 min | €25 | €30 |
| Essaouira medina | about 20 min | €20 | €25 |
| Moulay Bouzerktoun | about 40 min | €35 | €40 |
From Marrakech, our Marrakech to Essaouira transfer costs from €100 per vehicle; we continue to Sidi Kaouki or Ghazoua on request.
For retreat organisers: when several participants land on the same flight, a single van or minibus is cheaper and friendlier than individual taxis. Send us the arrival list and we will group the pick-ups — read our guide to group transport in Essaouira.
Our tip: if several participants land on the same flight, ask your retreat organiser to book a single van — it is cheaper per person and the retreat starts in the car.
A free day
Retreats usually leave a free afternoon or day. Spend it in the medina, or join our full-day excursion to Sidi Kaouki and the argan route. Check the Essaouira events calendar too: a retreat week can coincide with a concert at Dar Souiri or a festival.
