Essaouira is a small town with a big musical life — UNESCO counts it among its Creative Cities of Music. Over a year, it hosts festivals for very different audiences: tens of thousands of people for the Gnawa nights of June, a few hundred connoisseurs for a chamber-music concert in a riad. Choosing between the Essaouira music festivals depends on what you like, how you travel and how much crowd you can take.

Here is a side-by-side comparison.

The Gnaoua and World Music Festival: the big one

For three days in late June, the whole town becomes a stage. Free concerts take place on Place Moulay Hassan and on the beach, while smaller ticketed concerts are held in historic venues of the medina. The famous fusions bring Gnawa masters together with musicians from all over the world — read the story of Gnawa jazz.

Choose it if you love energy, crowds, dancing and a festival that never sleeps. Plan ahead: accommodation fills up weeks in advance, prices rise and transfers must be booked early.

The Andalousies Atlantiques: memory and emotion

Every autumn, Jewish and Muslim musicians share the stage to celebrate the Andalusian heritage of Morocco, with forums at Bayt Dakira in the morning and concerts in the afternoon and evening. In 2026, local agendas list 29 October to 1 November. Read our listener's guide to Andalusian music and our 3-day weekend plan.

Choose it if you like meaningful, intimate concerts and want to understand the town's history.

Jazz sous l'Arganier: the winter jazz club

Between Christmas and New Year, jazz musicians from Morocco and abroad play in small venues of the medina, with Gnawa guests and jam sessions late into the night. Choose it if you want to spend the end-of-year holidays somewhere sunny, calm and musical — see Essaouira in December.

The Printemps Musical des Alizés: classical by the ocean

In spring, chamber music, piano recitals and opera arias fill Dar Souiri and other elegant venues. The 2026 edition ran from 30 April to 3 May. Choose it if you love classical music and quiet, refined evenings.

A festival year in Essaouira: four trip ideas

  1. A long weekend in late June for the Gnaoua festival: arrive on Thursday, dance on the beach stages, catch an intimate concert in the medina, rest on Sunday morning.
  2. A week in late October: the tbourida of the Moussem of Sidi El Mokhtar on the way from Marrakech, a few quiet days on the coast, then the Andalousies Atlantiques.
  3. Christmas to New Year: Jazz sous l'Arganier, the contemporary art of the Casablanca Biennale and a New Year's Eve dinner on a rooftop.
  4. A spring escape: chamber music at the Printemps Musical des Alizés, kitesurfing or windsurfing in the afternoons and long walks in the argan country.

And the rest of the year?

Essaouira's music does not stop between festivals. Dar Souiri programmes concerts and talks, restaurants invite Gnawa musicians in the evening, and in October an electronic music and arts festival, Moga, has joined the calendar. Our Essaouira events calendar lists everything month by month.

Practical tips for all Essaouira music festivals

  • Stay in or near the medina so you can walk to the venues — see where to stay in Essaouira.
  • Book your transfers early for festival weekends, especially the Gnaoua festival.
  • Plan the late return if you are staying in Diabat, Ghazoua or Sidi Kaouki: the medina's petits taxis are scarce after midnight. Our guide to getting to Essaouira for a festival explains the options.
  • Bring a warm layer for evening concerts, whatever the season — the Atlantic breeze is cool at night.
  • Check the programme every day: concert times often shift during festivals, so follow the official channels and arrive early for the intimate venues, which fill up fast.
  • Carry cash in small notes: card payment is not always possible at food stalls, tea tents and small venues, and you will need change for tips and porters.
  • Take a day off from the music: our full-day private excursion to Sidi Kaouki and the argan country is a perfect break.
