The medina of Essaouira is car-free, compact and best explored on foot. But as soon as you need to reach the airport, a beach outside town, a riad in Diabat or another city, the question comes up: how does a taxi in Essaouira work? There are three main options — the small blue petits taxis, the shared grands taxis and private drivers — plus the porters who carry your luggage into the medina.

Here is how each works, what it costs and when to use it.

Petits taxis: short rides in town

Essaouira's petits taxis are small blue cars that carry up to three passengers within the town limits. They are cheap and practical:

  • Where: between the medina gates, the new town, the beach hotels, the bus station and the residential areas.
  • How much: short rides in town usually cost just a few dirhams — local reports mention fares around 7–10 MAD by day — with a supplement at night.
  • How: wave one down or find one at the ranks near the medina gates. Ask for the meter, or agree on the price before you get in.
  • Limits: petits taxis cannot enter the medina, which is pedestrian, and are generally not meant for trips outside town.

Grands taxis: shared rides to the villages

Grands taxis are larger cars that run on fixed routes between towns and villages. They leave from the grand-taxi stand outside the medina, near the bus station, when all the seats are taken.

  • Fares are per seat and modest — for example, travellers report around 10–15 MAD per person to Sidi Kaouki.
  • You can hire the whole car by paying for all the seats, which gives you a private ride.
  • Comfort is basic, and you may wait a while for the car to fill up. With luggage, children or after dark, it is rarely the best option.

Taxi in Essaouira: the airport question

Essaouira-Mogador airport is about 15 km from town. Taxi fares for this ride are negotiated, vary with the time of day and the amount of luggage, and are often higher than travellers expect, especially for late arrivals. A pre-booked transfer avoids the discussion: our Essaouira airport transfer costs from €20 per vehicle for up to three passengers, at the time of writing — the price is fixed, the driver waits with a name sign even if the flight is late, and he takes you to the medina gate nearest your riad. Read our Essaouira airport transfer guide for the details.

Private drivers: airport, villages and other cities

A private driver makes most sense when:

  • you arrive or leave by plane, especially at night;
  • you are staying outside the medina — Diabat, Ghazoua, Sidi Kaouki or Moulay Bouzerktoun;
  • you travel between cities: our Essaouira to Marrakech transfer takes about 2 h 30, from €90 per vehicle;
  • you are a family or a group, with vans for up to seven and minibuses for up to seventeen passengers;
  • you come back late from a concert or a festival — see getting to Essaouira for a festival.

Prices are per vehicle, not per person, and fixed when you book.

Taxi in Essaouira with children or a group

Petits taxis take three passengers at most, without child seats, and grands taxis are rarely adapted to families with luggage. If you travel with children, a pushchair or more than three people, a pre-booked van is far more comfortable: everyone travels together, the luggage fits, and you can ask in advance for a child seat or a booster. Our vans carry up to seven passengers and our minibuses up to seventeen — see group transport in Essaouira.

Porters at the medina gates

Cars stop at the gates; inside, porters with hand carts carry luggage to the riads. They know every address in town. Agree the price before they load your bags, and keep small change ready. If your riad sends someone to meet you, give us their number and your driver will call ahead. Our guide to Essaouira's medina gates shows which gate is closest to your riad.

Tips for taking a taxi in Essaouira

  • Carry small notes and coins; drivers often lack change.
  • Agree on the price — or ask for the meter — before the ride starts.
  • Write down your address or show your riad's location on your phone; many riads are known by name rather than by street.
  • At night, petits taxis become scarce in the medina area after midnight; plan your return in advance.
  • Be patient and polite: most drivers are honest, and a smile works wonders.
