Most people reach Essaouira by road from Marrakech. A growing number skip that drive entirely and land a few kilometres from the ocean, at Essaouira-Mogador Airport. If that is your plan, the Essaouira airport transfer is the shortest and simplest leg of your whole trip — provided you know what to expect from a very small airport.

Essaouira-Mogador Airport in a nutshell
The airport (code ESU) sits in open countryside south-east of the city, roughly 15 km from the medina walls. It has one compact terminal, a single baggage belt and a short walk from the aircraft to the exit. On a quiet day you can be outside twenty minutes after landing.
Flights are few: a handful of direct routes, mostly from Western European cities, several of them seasonal. That has two consequences. Arrival formalities are usually quick, but services outside the terminal are limited — taxis are not guaranteed for every flight, and there is no big transport hub waiting for you.
How long is the drive into Essaouira?
About 20 minutes to the medina gates, a little less to the hotels along the beachfront. The road runs through argan country and low hills before the town and the ocean appear. Other common destinations from the airport:

Your Essaouira airport transfer options
Taxis
Grand taxis sometimes meet flights and will take you into town for a negotiated fare. They are a reasonable option when they are there — but on late or busy flights there can be more passengers than cars. If you go this way, agree the price for the whole car before loading your bags, and keep your accommodation's address and phone number available offline.
A pre-booked private transfer
With our Essaouira airport transfer, your driver waits at arrivals with a sign showing your name. We follow your flight, so a delay does not leave you stranded, and the car has air conditioning and bottled water on board. The price is fixed per vehicle: at the time of writing €20 for up to four passengers, €25 for a van for up to seven and €50 for a minibus for groups of up to seventeen.
For a couple landing at 11 pm with two suitcases and a riad booked in the medina, that certainty is usually worth more than the few euros a taxi might save.
Arriving at a medina riad
Essaouira's medina is pedestrian, so every car — ours included — stops at one of the gates or at the car park by the port. From there it is a short walk. Porters with hand carts wait at the main gates and know every riad by name; agree their price before they load up, as porterage is not part of a transfer price. Better still, ask your riad to send someone to meet you, and give us their phone number so your driver can call ahead.
Hotels on the beachfront, in the new town or in the countryside have car access, so the driver drops you at the door.
Going further than Essaouira
Many travellers use the airport as a gateway to the whole coast rather than just the town.
- Sidi Kaouki — the wild beach south of Essaouira is about half an hour away, perfect for surfers and kitesurfers who want to start straight away.

Flying home from Essaouira
The departure is as easy as the arrival. Plan to leave the medina about two hours before your flight: twenty minutes on the road, a security check, then check-in. Queues are rarely long, but counters open and close on a fixed schedule and there are few alternative flights if you miss yours. We collect you at the gate nearest your riad or at your hotel reception.
A few practical tips
- Sort out cash in advance. Services at a small airport are limited, especially late at night, so do not count on an exchange desk being open. Make sure your bank card works in Moroccan ATMs — there are plenty inside the city walls.
- Screenshot your booking and your riad's details. Once you have a local SIM, data works well, but it helps to have everything ready the moment you step off the plane.
- Pack a warm layer. The Atlantic wind can make an evening arrival feel surprisingly cool, even in summer.
