Ask a musician in Essaouira where the good concerts are and the answer will often be the same two words: Dar Souiri. Behind a modest door in the medina, this cultural house of the Essaouira-Mogador association hosts many of the town's most memorable evenings — jazz between Christmas and New Year, Andalusian music in autumn, chamber music in spring, lectures, book launches and exhibitions in between.
It is small, it is not a tourist attraction, and that is exactly its charm. Here is how to make the most of Dar Souiri in Essaouira, especially in winter.
What is Dar Souiri?
"Dar Souiri" means "the house of the Souiri", the people of Essaouira. The building serves as the socio-cultural space of the Essaouira-Mogador association, the organisation behind several of the town's festivals. It has a concert hall with room for an audience of a few hundred at most, spaces for exhibitions and meetings, and a programme that follows the festival calendar.
Because of its size, a concert at Dar Souiri feels like a private evening: the musicians are a few metres away, the acoustics are warm and the audience mixes Souiris, Moroccans from other cities and curious travellers.
What happens at Dar Souiri through the year
| Season | What you may find |
|---|---|
| Autumn | Afternoon concerts of the Festival des Andalousies Atlantiques (late October – early November); Joudour, a festival of Sufi music and literature, has used the space in September |
| Late November | Exhibitions of the Rendez-vous de la Photo |
| Late December | Jazz sous l'Arganier concerts and jam sessions |
| Spring | Concerts of the Printemps Musical des Alizés, piano recitals and young talents |
| June | Intimate concerts during the Gnaoua festival |
Between festivals, Dar Souiri hosts talks, conferences, exhibitions and community events, announced at short notice.
Winter 2026–2027 at Dar Souiri
Winter is a good time to discover the venue, because the town is calm and the evenings are made for indoor concerts:
- Late November: photography exhibitions during the Rendez-vous de la Photo (dates to be confirmed).
- Late December: Jazz sous l'Arganier, listed for 26–28 December 2026 by local agendas.
- All winter: the Casablanca International Biennale (10 December 2026 – 10 January 2027) brings contemporary art to venues across Essaouira — see our Biennale guide.
How to find the programme and tickets
Dar Souiri does not run a big box office. The best ways to know what is on:
- Look at the posters at the entrance and around the medina.
- Follow the Essaouira-Mogador association and the festivals' official channels.
- Ask your riad: hosts usually know what is on that week.
Some events are free, others require a ticket sold online or on site. Seats are limited, so arrive early for popular concerts.

Around Dar Souiri
Make an evening of it. Before the concert, walk along the ramparts at sunset; afterwards, have dinner in the medina — see our where to eat in Essaouira guide. In the daytime, combine Dar Souiri with Bayt Dakira, the house of memory in the old mellah, the médiathèque of the Institut français (read our médiathèque and cinema guide) and the art galleries of Essaouira.
A cultural weekend around Dar Souiri
Here is how we would spend a winter weekend built around a concert at Dar Souiri:
- Friday: arrive from Marrakech or Essaouira airport, check in to a medina riad, sunset on the Skala and a first dinner near Place Moulay Hassan.
- Saturday: morning at the port, then Bayt Dakira and the mellah; afternoon in the art galleries; in the evening, the concert at Dar Souiri.
- Sunday: a long walk on the beach towards Diabat, lunch of grilled fish at the port, and a last look at the exhibitions before heading home.
Ask your riad for the week's programme as soon as you book: a talk or a small concert at Dar Souiri can turn an ordinary weekend into a memorable one.
Good to know: Dar Souiri is a cultural venue, not a museum — outside events, it may simply be closed. Check the programme before you go.
Practical tips
- Dress warmly in winter: the medina is cool in the evening and stone halls stay fresh.
- Stay in the medina if you plan several concerts — you will walk home in minutes.
- Respect the musicians: phones on silent, and ask before filming.
Getting to Essaouira
Our Marrakech to Essaouira transfer takes about 2 h 30 door to door, from €100 per vehicle at the time of writing; from Essaouira-Mogador airport, the airport transfer takes about twenty minutes, from €20. The driver stops at the medina gate nearest your riad.
On a free day, the half-day excursion along the argan route and coast is the perfect counterpoint to the concerts. For every festival of the year, see the Essaouira events calendar.
