Arrivals get all the attention. Travellers read guides, book pickups, message their riads — and then, a week later, try to get from a medina lane to a departure gate with twenty minutes' margin and a suitcase full of lanterns. A good transfer to Marrakech airport is less about the car than about the timing, and the timing is where most last days go wrong.
Here is how to leave calmly.
How early should you get to Menara?
For an international flight, aim to reach the terminal two and a half to three hours before departure in high season, and at least two hours at quieter times. That can feel generous for a mid-sized airport, but departures here involve more steps than many visitors expect:
- A security check at the terminal entrance, before you even reach the check-in hall.
- Check-in and bag drop, where queues build when several flights leave close together.
- Passport control for your exit stamp.
- A second security check before the gates.
Each step is usually quick. Together, on a busy Sunday morning, they are not.
Working backwards from your flight
The drive itself is short from most of Marrakech. What people forget is the time before the car.

Leaving a medina riad with luggage
Your car will wait at the gate or square nearest your riad — the same place you arrived. Between the riad door and the car there may be five minutes of lanes, and with heavy bags it takes longer. A few habits make it painless:
- Ask the riad for help the evening before. Staff will often carry bags to the car or call a porter.
- Settle your bill the night before, especially for early departures.
- Agree the exact meeting point with your driver, and share the riad's phone number so that the driver can call.
- For early flights, request a breakfast box. Riad kitchens rarely open before 7 am.

Running late? What to do
Traffic on the way to Menara is rarely a problem, but a slow breakfast or a lost passport can eat into your margin. If you are behind schedule, tell your driver straight away — a few minutes can often be recovered on the road. At the airport, go directly to your airline's desk rather than joining the general queue, and explain your departure time to the staff. Remember that check-in for international flights usually closes about an hour before departure; your airline's own rules are the ones that count.
Before you go through security
- Change leftover dirhams at the airport before passport control and keep your exchange receipts, as you may be asked for them.
- Tax-free shopping: if you bought expensive items in shops displaying a tax refund sign, ask for the forms when you pay and allow extra time at the airport for the formalities.
- Liquids and argan oil: anything over 100 ml goes in the hold. Wrap bottles carefully — argan oil is lovely on skin and less lovely on clothes.
- Leather and lanterns travel better in hand luggage than you think; ask the shop to pack them flat.
