The medina of Essaouira is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and like most Moroccan medinas it is closed to cars. That is part of its charm — and the reason why every taxi, transfer and private car ends its journey at one of the Essaouira medina gates. Knowing which gate is closest to your riad saves you a long walk with your suitcase and makes your arrival much smoother.

Here is a practical guide to the gates, the porters and the best way to arrive and leave.

Why every car stops at a gate

The lanes inside the walls are narrow, paved and reserved for pedestrians, bicycles and hand carts. Vehicles stop at the gates or at the car parks just outside. From there:

  • a porter with a hand cart takes your luggage to the door of your riad, or
  • someone from your riad meets you at the gate and walks with you.

Your driver usually calls the riad when you are about fifteen minutes away, so that someone is waiting. If you book a transfer with us, send us your riad's phone number and we take care of it.

The main Essaouira medina gates

Bab Doukkala — the north-east gate

The gate in the photo above, with its three crenellated arches, opens onto the north of the medina. It is the natural arrival point from the Marrakech and Safi roads, close to the bus station and the grand-taxi stand. Use it for riads in the mellah, the northern lanes and the area along the main street that runs from the gate into the medina. The old Jewish cemetery is just outside — see our guide to the Jewish heritage in Essaouira.

Bab Marrakech — the eastern gate

A smaller gate on the eastern wall, restored and lit at night, leading into the heart of the souks. A good option for riads in the central and eastern parts of the medina.

Bab Sbaa — the southern gate

On the southern side, between the medina and the new town, Bab Sbaa is close to the beachfront avenue and many hotels. Use it for riads in the southern medina and the Kasbah quarter.

The port and Bab el Marsa — the sea gate

The large car park by the fishing port is the closest drop-off for Place Moulay Hassan, the Skala de la Ville and the western lanes of the medina. From the port, the old sea gate, Bab el Marsa, leads onto the square. It is also the most convenient gate for evening concerts on the square.

The medina is small: from any gate, you are rarely more than ten minutes on foot from your door. Our medina and ramparts walking guide helps you find your bearings on the first afternoon.

Porters: how it works

  • They wait at the gates and car parks with hand carts and know almost every riad by name.
  • Agree the price before loading your bags; it depends on the distance and the number of suitcases. Keep small change ready.
  • Walk with them — they go fast, but you will quickly learn the way.

Arriving at night, with children or with reduced mobility

  • At night, the lanes are quiet and dimly lit; ask your riad to send someone to the gate.
  • With a pushchair, the main lanes are paved and fairly flat; a porter's cart can carry the luggage while you push.
  • With reduced mobility, choose a riad close to a gate, or a hotel on the beachfront that cars can reach directly. Our guide to where to stay in Essaouira compares the options.

Departure day

Agree with your driver on the meeting point — usually the gate you arrived at — and on the time. Ask your riad to book a porter for your luggage. For a flight from Essaouira-Mogador, leave the medina about two hours before departure; for Marrakech airport, count two and a half to three hours of driving plus check-in.

Getting to the gates

Tell us the name of your riad when you book: we will choose the right one among the Essaouira medina gates and make sure someone is waiting. Contact us for any question.
