Most travellers arrive in Marrakech with the same dream: snowy Atlas peaks, earth-built kasbahs, a night under the stars in the Sahara and, if possible, a few days by the ocean. The good news is that all of this starts at your riad door. The hard part is choosing. Multi-day tours from Marrakech range from a gentle three-day escape in the mountains to a full week through the desert and down to the Atlantic coast, and the right choice depends far more on your time and travel style than on a checklist of sights.

This guide compares the six private circuits we organise from Marrakech, explains what each day really looks like and gives honest advice on how many days you need.

Why choose multi-day tours from Marrakech?

Marrakech sits on the northern edge of the High Atlas, which means two hours of driving put you in Berber villages and three to four hours bring you over the Tizi n'Tichka pass to Ouarzazate, the "door of the desert". From there, the classic routes fan out: east towards the Dades and Todra gorges and the dunes of Merzouga, south down the Draa valley to Zagora, or west across the Anti-Atlas to Taroudant and Agadir.

A private circuit lets you link these regions without changing transport, without fixed group timetables and with a driver who stops when you want a photo, a mint tea or a walk in a palm grove.

3 days: Atlas & Agafay or Zagora?

With three days you have two very different options.

The 3-day Atlas & Agafay tour keeps the driving short. You hike around Imlil below Mount Toubkal, have lunch with a Berber family, see the turquoise water of Lalla Takerkoust and spend the night in a camp in the Agafay stone desert, 40 minutes from Marrakech. It is ideal with children or if you prefer landscapes to long roads. Our Atlas & Agafay itinerary details each stage.

The 3-day Zagora desert tour crosses the High Atlas to Aït Ben Haddou and Ouarzazate, then follows the palm groves of the Draa valley to the dunes near Zagora. You get kasbahs, film studios and a desert camp, but with more time in the car. Read our Zagora itinerary before deciding.

4 days: the Merzouga classic

If seeing high golden dunes is your priority, the 4-day Marrakech to Merzouga tour is the circuit we recommend most. It breaks the long road with a night in the Dades gorges, passes the Todra canyon and gives you two nights in the desert at Erg Chebbi: a sunset camel ride on the first evening and a full day for a 4x4 excursion, the Gnawa village of Khamlia and an optional quad ride on the second. Our day-by-day Merzouga itinerary explains the timings.

5 days: the Grand South loop

The 5-day Grand South tour never drives the same road twice. You go out through Ouarzazate, the Valley of Roses, the Dades and the Todra to Merzouga, then return via the pre-Saharan landscapes of Alnif and Tazzarine to Zagora and the Draa valley. It is the best balance between driving and discovering if you have five days. See the Grand South itinerary.

6 and 7 days: desert and ocean

Many visitors want to finish their trip by the sea. The 6-day Sahara & Atlantic coast tour goes from the Merzouga dunes to Agadir, Taroudant and Essaouira, while the 7-day grand tour adds a second desert night, the Draa valley and a gentler pace. Compare them in our guides to the 6-day desert and ocean tour and the 7-day Morocco tour.

How many days do you really need?

  • 2 to 3 days: stay close — Atlas, Agafay or Zagora. Merzouga in three days is possible but exhausting.
  • 4 days: the minimum we recommend for Erg Chebbi.
  • 5 days: the whole South comfortably.
  • 6 to 7 days: the South plus the Atlantic coast, or a slower pace with more walks and free time.

A simple rule: count roughly one long driving day for every two days of travel, and avoid stacking two very long days back to back.

What a private circuit includes

All our multi-day tours from Marrakech are organised by Rouasse Travels and operated with licensed tourist transport partners: a private air-conditioned vehicle, a professional driver, hotel pickup in Marrakech and accommodation selected to match your budget — riads and kasbah hotels on the road, a standard or luxury camp in the desert. Activities such as quad biking, 4x4 excursions or a Moroccan cooking class can be added, and the route can be shortened, lengthened or slowed down. Our guide to tailor-made Morocco tours explains how, and our honest comparison of private and shared desert tours shows what the difference really is. Planning a honeymoon? See our romantic Morocco itinerary.

When to go

October to April is the most comfortable season for the desert, and spring adds green valleys and roses in Kelaat M'Gouna. Summer is very hot in the Sahara but still possible with early starts. Our article on the best time to visit the Sahara goes month by month.
