Ask ten hotel receptionists about day trips from Marrakech and you will get ten glossy leaflets promising mountains, waterfalls, desert and ocean — sometimes all on the same day. We spend our lives on these roads, so here is the version the leaflets leave out: how long you actually sit in the car, and which trips are a pleasure rather than an endurance test.
Our rule of thumb is simple. A great day trip has less than two hours of driving each way. Beyond that, the destination is usually worth a night.

1. The Ourika Valley: the easy classic
If you only do one trip out of the city, make it this one. An hour and a quarter south of the medina, the red plain folds into the High Atlas and the Ourika river runs past terraced fields, walnut trees and earthen villages. At the end of the road, the village of Setti Fatma is the starting point for a walk to a series of waterfalls, and riverside restaurants serve tagine at tables set on the rocks.
It suits almost everyone — couples, families with children, people who want nature without a trek. 2. Agafay: desert light, 45 minutes away
The Agafay is not the Sahara of the postcards — it is a stony desert of rolling, bare hills — but at sunset, with the Atlas behind it, it is spectacular. Camps offer camel rides, quad biking and dinners under the stars. It is the answer for travellers who want a taste of the desert but do not have three days for Merzouga.
3. Imlil and the Toubkal valleys
Imlil sits at the foot of Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest peak. You do not need to climb it: easy walks between the villages around Imlil give you mountain air, apple and walnut orchards and views that feel far from Marrakech. Bring proper shoes and a warm layer — it is much cooler up there.
4. Ouzoud: big waterfalls, long day
The Ouzoud falls drop more than 100 metres into a red gorge, with rainbows in the spray and Barbary macaques in the olive trees. They are genuinely impressive — but at two and a half to three hours each way, this is a long day. Leave early and accept that you will spend around six hours on the road.
5. Essaouira: better with a night
You can do Essaouira as a day trip, and many people do. But after five or six hours in the car, you get a few rushed hours in a town whose whole point is slowing down. 6. Aït Benhaddou and Ouarzazate: not a day trip, really
The ksar of Aït Benhaddou is unforgettable, but the Tizi n'Tichka pass makes it three and a half to four hours each way. As a day trip it means eight hours of mountain road. Stay a night in Ouarzazate or nearby instead: our Tizi n'Tichka road guide explains the best stops.
Choosing between day trips from Marrakech
- Travelling with children? Ourika or Agafay: short drives, lots to see.
- Love walking? Imlil for mountain paths, Setti Fatma for a scramble to the falls.
- Photographers: Agafay at sunset, Ouzoud in the morning light.
- Only one free day? Ourika. It gives you the Atlas, a river, villages and lunch by the water with the least time in the car.
Private or group?
Group tours are cheaper per seat but come with fixed times, hotel pickup rounds and shop stops. A private car goes at your pace, and because it is priced per vehicle, it quickly becomes competitive for three or more people.
