Not every great trip needs ten hours on the road. An Atlas tour from Marrakech over three days gives you the mountains, Berber village life, a lake framed by peaks and a night in the desert — with short drives, plenty of time outside the car and no early-morning marathons. It is the circuit we suggest to families, couples on a short break and anyone who arrives tired and wants to see "real" Morocco without spending the holiday in a vehicle.
Here is how the three days unfold on our 3-day Atlas & Agafay private tour.
Day 1: Marrakech to Imlil through the Asni valley
Your driver picks you up at your riad or hotel in the morning. Within half an hour the city gives way to olive groves, then the road begins to climb into the Asni valley, lined with red-earth villages and walnut trees. If you travel on a Saturday, a stop at the weekly market in Asni is a lively introduction to rural life — donkeys, mint, spices and second-hand tools, with hardly a souvenir in sight.
Around 90 minutes after leaving Marrakech you reach Imlil, at roughly 1,740 metres, the base village for treks to Jebel Toubkal, North Africa's highest summit at 4,167 metres. A local guide leads a walk adapted to your level: terraced fields, irrigation channels, the village of Aroumd perched on its rocky spur, and on clear days snow on the ridges well into spring.
Lunch is served in a family home: a tagine cooked over charcoal, fresh bread, salads and endless mint tea. This is often the moment our guests remember most. Read our guide to Imlil and the Toubkal valley for walking options and the best seasons.
Day 2: Lalla Takerkoust and the Agafay desert
After breakfast the road descends from the mountains towards Lalla Takerkoust, a reservoir whose blue water reflects the Atlas. It is a fine place for a stroll along the shore, a coffee on a terrace or, in warm months, a kayak or paddle session. Our Lalla Takerkoust guide lists what you can do there.

A few kilometres further, the landscape changes completely. The Agafay desert is a stone desert of bare, golden hills, with the snow-capped Atlas on the horizon. You settle into your camp in the afternoon, then set off on a camel ride timed for sunset, when the hills turn pink and the light softens. Dinner is Berber-style — tagine or couscous, often with music around the fire — and the night sky is surprisingly dark for a place so close to a big city. See our Agafay desert guide for camp categories and tips.

Day 3: sunrise, quad or buggy and back to Marrakech
Set an alarm for sunrise: watching the first light reach the Atlas from the camp is worth it. After breakfast you can add a quad or buggy ride through the hills — our quad and buggy guide explains what to expect — or simply relax. You are back at your riad by early afternoon, with time left for the medina or a hammam.
Who is this Atlas tour from Marrakech for?
- Families: short drives, a camel ride, space to run around and a camp night that children love. Our desert trip with kids guide has more advice.
- Short stays: three days is enough to feel you have left the city behind.
- Walkers: the Imlil hike can be lengthened for experienced hikers, or replaced by a gentle stroll.
- Travellers who dislike long roads: the longest leg is under two hours.
If your main dream is high golden sand dunes, though, be honest with yourself: Agafay is a stone desert. For the classic Sahara you need at least four days and the Merzouga circuit.
When to go and what to pack
An Atlas tour from Marrakech works all year round, but each season changes the trip. Spring (March to May) brings almond and cherry blossom and green terraces. Autumn offers clear skies and comfortable walking. Winter can bring snow to Imlil and cold nights in Agafay — wonderful views, but pack warm layers. Summer is the time to enjoy the mountain coolness; Agafay is hot in the afternoon, which is why activities are planned for late in the day.
Bring comfortable walking shoes, a warm layer for the evening even in spring, sunglasses, sunscreen, a scarf against wind and dust, and some cash for tips and small purchases.
What is included and how to book
Our circuits are organised by Rouasse Travels and operated with licensed transport partners. The tour includes a private air-conditioned vehicle, a professional driver, pickup and drop-off in Marrakech and accommodation chosen to match your budget — a guesthouse in the Imlil valley and a standard or luxury tent in Agafay. Optional extras include a longer camel ride, a quad session, a Moroccan cooking class or a visit to an argan cooperative.
Prices are tailored to your group size, accommodation level and season, so the easiest way to plan your Atlas tour from Marrakech is to send us your dates on WhatsApp: we reply with a clear proposal and suggestions for the best timing. Want to compare with other routes first? Our guide to multi-day tours from Marrakech puts all six circuits side by side, and the Atlas mountains guide covers day trips if you only have one free day.
