Walk through Marrakech's medina and you will see the signs everywhere: "Sahara 3 days", "Merzouga desert tour", sometimes at prices that seem too good to be true. Then you look at a private desert tour and wonder whether the difference is worth it. The honest answer: it depends on who you are, how you travel and how many of you there are.
Here is our comparison, written by people who drive these roads every week.
How shared group tours work
Shared tours fill a minibus with up to 15 or 17 travellers from different hotels. The itinerary is fixed, usually three days to Merzouga and back or two days to Zagora. Pickups start early and can take a while as the bus collects everyone; stops are planned for the whole group, often including shops and restaurants chosen in advance; and the camp is usually a large one with many groups.
Good for: solo travellers on a tight budget who enjoy meeting other people and do not mind long days.
How a private desert tour works
A private tour means your own vehicle and professional driver, for you alone. You leave from your riad at the time you choose, you stop when something catches your eye, you take a longer lunch, you skip what does not interest you and you add a night where you want to slow down. Accommodation is chosen for your budget and preferences — a family tent, a luxury camp, a kasbah with a pool.
Good for: couples, families, friends travelling together, photographers, honeymooners, older travellers and anyone who values comfort and flexibility.

| Stops | Planned for the group | Wherever you want |
| Pace | Fixed, often rushed | Adapted to you |
| Camp | Usually large | Chosen for you |
| Route | Standard | Adaptable or tailor-made |
| Price | Per person | Per vehicle, shared by your group |
The real cost difference
Shared tours are priced per person, and the headline price is low. But look closely at what is included: sometimes the camel ride, dinner or drinks are extra, and stops at partner shops are part of the business model. A private desert tour is priced per vehicle and per accommodation level, so the more of you there are, the smaller the difference per person. For a family of four or a group of friends, a private circuit is often far closer in price than expected — with a completely different experience.
Time is the hidden cost
The biggest difference is not money, it is time and energy. Shared three-day tours to Merzouga mean two very long driving days for one night in the dunes. On our private circuits we prefer to give you more time: a night in the Dades on the way, two nights in the desert on the 4-day Merzouga tour, and a loop that never retraces its steps on the 5-day Grand South tour.

A day on a private desert tour, hour by hour
- 8.30 a.m.: your driver waits at the gate nearest your riad; no other pickups.
- 10 a.m.: coffee stop with a view on the Tizi n'Tichka, as long as you like.
- 12 p.m.: Aït Ben Haddou at your own pace, with a local guide if you want one.
- 1.30 p.m.: lunch where you prefer — a simple terrace or a kasbah restaurant.
- 4 p.m.: an unplanned stop at a village market or a palm grove that caught your eye.
- 6 p.m.: arrival at your guesthouse in time to watch the sunset from the terrace.
That freedom is what a private desert tour really buys you.
Questions to ask before booking any desert tour
- How many nights in the desert, and how many hours of driving each day?
- What type of camp, and are bathrooms shared or private?
- What exactly is included: camel ride, dinner, breakfast, activities?
- What vehicle, and is it air-conditioned?
- Who drives, and are transport providers licensed?
- Can the itinerary be adapted?
On our side, Rouasse Travels organises each circuit and works with licensed tourist transport partners and professional drivers. Everything included is stated clearly in your proposal.
So, which one should you choose?
If you are travelling alone on a backpacker budget, a shared tour can be a fun way to see the desert. For almost everyone else — couples, families, friends, travellers who want comfort, photography or simply their own rhythm — a private desert tour is worth it. Our general article on private versus group tours in Morocco covers day trips too.
